Training during the Holidays
|
|
"When you invest in yourself, you cultivate the strength and clarity necessary to truly show up for others, offering your presence in ways that are more meaningful and genuine." |
What's the easiest way to disrupt a training plan?
- Holidays
- School Closure
- Travel
- Sick Kids/Family Members
Now let's pack it all into a 2 month window!
Now let's schedule next year's race season and count backwards.
Perfect timing, right?.......Wrong!
Let's face it, the holiday's disrupt a training schedule no matter how you slice it. Rather than fight it or use the word "disruption", let's just face it head on.
There are going to be days when you can train and days that you need to take off. Prepare for the variety and unpredictability.
Control what you can control:
- Consistency - you may not be able to do your weekend long run, but maybe you can get in 30 minutes. Try to show up and do a little something on your normal training days.
-
Intensity Control- germs, travel, change in sleep schedule, change in diet; all of these factors increase your likelihood of getting sick.
- So many athletes get tempted to do higher intensity workouts to replace the decrease in volume.
- Use caution, these high intensity workouts will also make you more susceptible to illness.
- With a decrease in volume, use your compressed time to do workouts that focus on technique or pace control.
-
Mindset: Big Picture- will taking a few days off or easy really impact a race >16 weeks away?
- Will spending time with your family create balance for when you need to spend more time training in a few months?
- Will staying healthy and free of sickness help you bounce back into training much more quickly after the holidays?
- Recharge- this is the time of year where your training doesn't need to be a priority. The holiday's may not be the least stressful time of the year, but it's a lot more stressful if you are constantly worrying about when to get in a workout.
The holiday's create change to the pattern. Our mind and body thrive off of creating patterns. Accept that this time of year will throw you off your routine, but it doesn't have to dismantle you.
This is the time of year to start planning for 2025. If you're considering a race in 2025, now is the time to get in touch.
